Presenting to you: The Pinot Society. This selection, The Tumult, comes from Santa Barbara County. Nestled in between two mountain ranges, the valley becomes flooded with cool air and fog from the tumultuous Pacific Ocean as it blows in through a gap in the western range. Vintage: Previous winter’s rains filled reservoirs, reducing irrigation needs and spurred vine growth in 2017. Fruit quality was above average throughout Santa Barbara County with all varietals producing smaller berries and lower yields than usual, particularly with Pinot Noir. Deep color and good flavor concentration dominates the 2017 vintage. These wines will drink nicely in their youth while aging gracefully. Winemaking: Known for its marine influences, Santa Barbara County is perfect for world-class cool-climate Pinot Noir. Coastal morning fog gives way to long growing days in a temperate banana belt climate. Think red berries picked at their peak of season to incapsulate the bright fruit notes. Elegance, with minerality and a subtle earthy quality marked by refined, velvety tannins defines Pinot Society’s style of cool-climate Pinot Noir. Tasting Notes: Aromas of red berries open to sweet-tart flavors of Bing cherry and pomegranate, moderated by hints of bittersweet chocolate to create a balanced and complex wine. Pair with grilled salmon or an ash-coated brie like Cambria’s Stepladder Big Sur.
